How Pneumatic Solenoid Valves Work

Home / News & Insights

Electrical signals move the valve spool to control airflow.

A pneumatic solenoid valve contains an enclosed chamber with ports connected to different air passages. An electromagnet moves the valve spool, connecting or blocking these passages to direct compressed air.

Compressed air routed through the valve acts on a cylinder piston. Switching the current to the solenoid therefore controls the movement of the pneumatic mechanism.

A valve’s working position refers to the position of its spool. The spool occupies one position when the coil is de-energized and another when energized. Each position opens or closes the relevant ports. A two-position valve has two distinct spool positions.
