How a Solenoid Valve Controls Movement

Home / News & Insights

An explanation of the connection between electrical input and fluid-powered motion.

A solenoid valve has an enclosed chamber with ports connected to fluid lines. Energizing the appropriate coil moves the internal valve element, opening or closing particular flow passages.

The directed hydraulic fluid acts on a cylinder piston. The piston moves its rod, which drives the connected machinery. Switching the solenoid current therefore provides electrical control of mechanical movement.
